Grain futures declined on Friday. The March SRW wheat contract closed at $5.44/bu ($200/mt; -1.8% compared to Thursday). The March HRW wheat contract in Kansas City fell to $5.59/bu ($206/mt; -2.0%). The March Euronext wheat contract closed at €226.00/mt ($237/mt; -1.8%). The March corn contract dropped to $4.86/bu ($192/mt; -0.7%).
For the week ending January 16, U.S. exporters sold 165,000 mt of wheat, falling short of market expectations of 200,000–600,000 mt, according to USDA data.
The total area for Ukrainian grain crops will reach 11.1 million hectares in 2025, Agriculture Minister Vitalii Koval announced. According to the ministry’s forecast, spring crop sowing will cover 5.8 million hectares, with corn accounting for 4.1 million hectares and wheat for 0.2 million hectares. Winter crops were sown on 5.2 million hectares.
In Russia’s Rostov region, the country’s top wheat-producing area, winter crops emerged on 2.51 million hectares, or 88% of all sown area, Deputy Governor Konstantin Rachalovsky reported. The official noted that January temperatures exceeded the norm by 2–7°C, resulting in weak vegetation activity in some areas.
