Grain futures declined on Monday. July SRW wheat closed at $5.31/bu ($195/mt; -2.2% compared to Friday). July HRW wheat in Kansas fell to $5.33/bu ($197/mt; -1.6%). September Euronext wheat settled at €202.25/mt ($229/mt; -2.5%). July corn dropped to $4.54/bu ($179/mt; -3.2%).
Corn planting in the U.S. was 40% complete, above last year’s level of 35% but slightly below the market estimate of 41%, according to the USDA. Spring wheat planting reached 44%, compared to 45% a year ago and the market estimate of 46%.
The share of U.S. winter wheat rated good or excellent stood at 51%, slightly above last year’s level of 50% and the market estimate of 50%, the USDA reported.
In the week ending May 1, U.S. wheat export inspections totaled 310 tmt, below the expected range of 400–600 tmt, according to the USDA. Sales fell below market expectations for the first time since early March.
