Russia starts new harvest with wheat yields up 29% y/y

Early harvest data from southern Russia show wheat and barley yields above last year after favorable weather.

Russia has started harvesting the new crop. Early data from southern regions, including Krasnodar and Stavropol, show yields above both last year’s levels and the recent average after favorable weather, according to SovEcon’s latest report.

As of last week, the starting average wheat yield was 3.69 t/ha, compared with 2.86 t/ha a year earlier and a five-year average of 3.44 t/ha. The barley yield was 4.69 t/ha, compared with 3.41 t/ha a year earlier and a five-year average of 4.28 t/ha.

In Stavropol, the initial wheat yield was 3.93 t/ha, compared with 3.59 t/ha a year earlier.

For barley, Krasnodar’s initial yield was 5.61 t/ha, compared with 5.42 t/ha a year earlier. Stavropol reported 4.07 t/ha, up from 3.74 t/ha a year earlier.

Southern yields rose sharply year on year, supported by favorable winter and spring weather and a low base after weak initial yields last season.

As of June 26, wheat had been harvested from 5.5K ha, compared with 27.4K ha a year earlier. Barley had been harvested from 167K ha, compared with 178.8K ha a year earlier.

Total wheat output was 20.3K tonnes, compared with 78.3K tonnes a year earlier. Barley output was 783.9K tonnes, compared with 610.1K tonnes a year earlier.

In June, SovEcon estimated the wheat crop at 88.8 mmt, down 2.3 mmt year on year. The barley crop was estimated at 18.7 mmt, down 0.9 mmt year on year. The total grain crop was estimated at 137.35 mmt. Updated forecasts will be released shortly.
